Statistics on Federal Court Cases

Data on litigation in the Federal Courts are now available for on-line analysis through the Legal Information Institute. The service, constructed by Professors Eisenberg and Clermont, of the Cornell Law School faculty requires a browser with strong forms support. It has been tested with several; Netscape, Spry's Mosaic (with in-line graphics turned off), Cello 2 (still in alpha test) all appear to work. Unfortunately, the version of Lynx that users get by telnetting to www.law.cornell.edu cannot, at present, handle the form.

The service will generate statistical reports based on over 3.5 million Federal Court civil cases, representing 15 years. The data were gathered by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, assembled by the Federal Judicial Center, and disseminated by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research.
