Definition

A defamatory statement that is communicated in a fixed medium and is considered to be so harmful on its face that the plaintiff need not prove special damages.

lawful permanent resident (LPR)

A lawful permanent resident is a non-citizen who has been granted authorization to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis. As proof of that status, a person is granted a permanent resident card, commonly called a "green card."

Lawful permanent residents may leave the U.S. multiple times and reenter, as long as they do not intend to stay outside the U.S. for 1 year or more. Staying outside of the country for more than one year (without a re-entry permit) may result in loss of permanent resident status.

labor certification

Labor certification is issued by Department of Labor (DOL) and must be obtained by U.S. employers seeking to hire foreign workers to perform services in the U.S.

Kiting

Definition

A crime involving writing a check on an account, Account A, with insufficient funds and depositing it in another account, Account B, and then writing a check on Account B and depositing it in Account A to cover the first check written on Account A. Kiting takes advantage of the time it takes banks to clear checks.

Know-how

Definition

The ability to achieve a practical end due to knowledge and/or skill. Know-how is intangible property, the rights to which a person may buy or sell.
