mugging

Primary tabs

The act of physical attack upon an isolated pedestrian on a public street at night and the taking of money and effects from his person. While generally not a crime on its own, a mugger may be criminally liable for the felony of common-law robbery. See State v. Smith. Mugging can also connote a physical attack on a pedestrian from behind. See also: Goldberg v. National Life Ins. Co.

In a gang context, “mean mugging” is a gang term for challenging down a rival gang member by staring them down, and is often a precursor to more serious violence. See Saechao v. Brazelton.
