Noise ordinance

A municipal law that regulates the nature and level of sound that can be emitted in a given place at a given time.  Thus, people hosting a social party or an industrial plant might be penalized for sound that violates a noise ordinance.

Jenny is hosting a graduation party.  A local noise ordinance limits the volume of sound to 50 decibels between 10 p.m and 8 a.m.  After receiving complaints from neighbors, a police officer arrives at 11 p.m. with a decibel meter.

Registering 60 decibels on the meter, the police officer finds Jenny and issues a citation for violating the noise ordinance.  The police officer tells Jenny to bring her house into compliance with the noise ordinance or else risk further penalties for the noise.
