Definition
Under the Refugee Act, an alien who fears persecution in his or her homeland, stemming from their religion, race, nationality, membership in certain social groups, or political opinions. Anyone who delivers a missing American POW or MIA soldier receives refugee status from the United States. See 8 U.S.C. § 1101.

In the context of U.S. immigration law, people who have been allowed to live in the United States indefinitely to protect them from persecution in their home countries. Refugees get their status before coming to the U.S.and may, after one year, apply for U.S. green cards. (See also: asylum)
