Advance Ohio Higher Education Act (2025)

Ohio Senate Bill 1 of 2025, the Advance Ohio Higher Education Act, prohibits state colleges and universities from mandating diversity, equity, and inclusion training, while affirming that these institutions must provide equal opportunity regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Alaska Statutes § 14.18.010 et seq. Prohibition Against Discrimination Based on Sex or Race in Public Education

Section 14.18.010 et seq. prohibits discrimination in Alaska’s public education system on the basis of sex or race, applying to both students and employees. It bars discriminatory practices in employment, counseling and guidance services, athletic and recreational programs, course offerings, textbooks, and instructional materials. The law is grounded in the Alaska Constitution’s guarantee of equal educational opportunity, and mandates that all programs and opportunities be available without regard to sex.

Bundy v. First Tennessee Bank National Association, 266 S.W.3d 410 (Tenn. Ct. App. 2007)

The plaintiff was a 59 year-old male employee who was fired following his failure to disclose documents that he received from a customer. He filed suit in the Shelby County Circuit Court alleging both age and sex discrimination in violation of the Tennessee Human Rights Act. He asserted that a female employee in a similar situation was treated more favorably and that the firing was a pretext for replacing him with a younger female employee.

Castro v. Tx Direct, LLC (Tenn. App. 2013)

The plaintiff worked at-will as a sales representative for the defendant. Shortly after she started working there, she discovered that she was pregnant and informed her supervisor. Shortly after that, her supervisor informed her that her yearly salary would be halved, allegedly because she had failed to meet sales quotas. When she contacted the CEO (with whom she had interviewed) about her pay reduction, her supervisor informed her that it was inappropriate to go over his head.

Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (Michigan, as amended)

The Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act declares that the opportunity to obtain employment, housing, education, and the full use of public accommodations is a civil right. The Act prohibits discrimination in these areas based on religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, height, weight, familial status, or marital status. It further provides protections against retaliation for opposing discriminatory practices or participating in related proceedings.
