Alabama Code Title 30. Marital and Domestic Relations

Title 30 of the Alabama Code addresses marital and family relations and outlines the state’s statutory framework for preventing and responding to domestic violence. Title 30 governs both civil protections and institutional responsibilities for assisting victims and reducing domestic violence fatalities. Chapter 5, Protection from Abuse, establishes the process for victims to obtain protective orders and defines abuse to include acts or threats of physical harm, harassment, intimidation, and other coercive conduct. Chapter 6, Domestic Violence Facilities, authorizes and regulates shelters that provide housing and support services to victims and their dependents, requiring confidential reporting to the state for oversight and policy development. Chapter 7, Domestic Violence Shelter Standards, prescribes minimum safety, staffing, and operational requirements that shelters must meet in order to receive public funding, ensuring privacy and access to critical services. Chapter 9, Domestic Violence Fatality Review Teams, creates multidisciplinary panels to review domestic-violence-related deaths and near-fatal incidents, with the goal of improving interagency coordination and prevention strategies.
