Under Alaska Stat. § 14.30.356 the state, in consultation with school districts, must develop and approve a program targeting teen dating violence and abuse awareness and prevention for grades 7 through 12. The program must include training for employees and students, notices to parents, and periodic review by a qualified individual or committee to ensure alignment with accepted standards. The instruction and training must be age‐appropriate and include warning signs of dating violence, traits of healthy relationships, strategies to prevent and stop abuse, and community resources available to victims. The statute also provides that a student may be excused from the training or notices upon written request by a parent or, if emancipated or age 18 or older, by the student. The training for teachers may count toward continuing education under AS 18.66.310. “Dating violence and abuse” is defined to include patterns of physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, or psychological behavior aimed at controlling a dating partner.
