Alaska Statutes § 18.66.100 Domestic Violence Protective Orders

Section 18.66.100 allows a person who has experienced domestic violence in Alaska to ask the court for a protective order against a current or former household member. A parent or guardian can file on behalf of a minor. After providing at least ten days' notice and holding a hearing, the court can take several steps to help keep the petitioner safe. These may include prohibiting further acts of violence, stalking, or harassment; blocking any unwanted calls or other contact; ordering the respondent to leave the shared home; and requiring them to stay away from specific places like the petitioner’s residence, workplace, school, or vehicle. The court can also prohibit the respondent from possessing firearms or other dangerous weapons and require them to surrender any they have. To assist with safety and access to personal property and pets, the court may authorize law enforcement to accompany the petitioner, and it may also grant temporary custody of any minor children involved.
