Avon Global Center 2011 Women and Justice Conference Report

In 2011, the Avon Global Center for Women and Justice hosted a conference in New Delhi, India on the theme “Gender-Based Violence and Justice in South Asia.” This conference brought together over 230 participants from 16 countries, including judges, activists, scholars, and survivors, to discuss strategies to combat gender-based violence (GBV) across South Asia and globally. The conference focused on:

  • Sharing legal, policy, and advocacy tools to address GBV;
  • Enhancing cross-border collaboration;
  • Using international human rights law in domestic legal systems;
  • Empowering women through property rights and economic independence;
  • Combating acid attacks, trafficking, sexual harassment, and violence during conflict;
  • Addressing the needs of girls facing early marriage, neglect, and discrimination.

Panels highlighted the barriers women face in accessing justice, such as legal loopholes, victim-blaming, and weak enforcement. Experts emphasized the importance of education, community outreach, legal reform, and property ownership in reducing violence.
