Cal. Code Regs. Tit. 13, § 1081 - Definitions
(a) "CRSC" is the
California Retreading Standards Committee.
(b) "FMVSS" is a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. These
standards are located in Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 571 . (e.g., FMVSS No. 109 is in Section 571.109, and FMVSS No. 119 is in
Section 571.119.)
(c) "Groove" is the space between adjacent tread ribs, lugs, or other tread
configurations that are separated by at least 5/64 inch (2 mm).
(d) "Major groove" is any tread
circumferential depression or circumferential series of depressions that has tread wear indicators or had the greatest equal depth when the tire was
new.
(e) "Multipurpose passenger vehicle" is a motor vehicle designed for carrying not more than 10
persons, including the driver, and constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-highway operation.
(f) "Passenger car" is a motor vehicle designed for carrying not more than 10 persons, including the driver. The
term excludes multipurpose passenger vehicles and all housecars, motortrucks, truck tractors, motorcycles, and motor-driven cycles, as defined in the
Vehicle Code.
(g) "Regroovable tire" is a tire manufactured with sufficient material for renewal of the
original tread pattern or generation of a new tread pattern without exposing the cord.
(h) "Regrooved
tire" is a tire on which the tread or retread pattern has been renewed or a new tread has been produced by cutting new grooves.
(i) "Tread pattern" is the nonskid design on the tread of the tire.
(j)
"Tread wear indicator" is the raised section in a groove that enables a person inspecting a tire to determine visually whether the tire has worn to a
tread depth of 2/32 inch (1.6 mm), except 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) in the case of motorcycle tires.
