Cal. Code Regs. Tit. 13, § 205.06 - Year of Manufacture License Plates for Vehicles with Model Years 1963 Through 1980
(a) Automobiles with model years from 1963 through 1969 must utilize license plates
displaying a black background with yellow characters within the alphanumeric series of AAA000 through YYY999.
(b) Model years 1963 through 1969 commercial vehicles or pickups must utilize license plates displaying a black
background with yellow characters within the alpha-numeric series of A00000-Z99999.
(c) Automobiles with
model years from 1970 through 1979 must utilize license plates displaying a blue background with yellow characters within the alpha-numeric series of
000AAA through 999ZZZ.
(d) Automobiles with a 1980 model year must utilize license plates displaying a
blue background with yellow characters within the alpha-numeric series of 1AAA000 through 1SZZ999.
(e)
Commercial vehicles or pickup trucks with model years from 1970 through 1974 must utilize license plates displaying a blue background with yellow
characters within the alpha-numeric series of 00000A through 99999Z.
(f) Commercial vehicles or pickup
trucks with model years from 1975 through 1980 must utilize license plates displaying a blue background with yellow characters within the
alpha-numeric series of 1A00001 through 3Z99999.
(g) License plates for model years 1963 and after must
be compatible with the type of vehicle to which it is being assigned.
