Mail Boxes to be placed on highway right of way must meet the following specifications which are to be made a part of driveway permit applications:
1. Mailbox materials and
size shall conform to the requirements of the United States Postal
Service.
2. Mailbox supports may be
4" x 4" square or 4" diameter round wood posts, 6" diameter PVC pipe, or any
other mailbox supports listed in the current edition of the AASHTO Roadside
Design Guide, Chapter 11 (The Roadway Design Division has a copy), or any
mailbox found acceptable and certified under the NCHRP 350 testing
program.
3. Mailbox front is
recommended to be 8" to 12" from the edge of the shoulder or the curb face,
with the post/support to be 39" to 47" above the shoulder edge or at a height
specified by the local United States Postal carrier.
4. A cross-section view of the roadway at the
mailbox location is shown below:

5. Any deviation
from the above specifications must be approved by the District
Engineer.
