N.J. Admin. Code § 13:20-33.14 - Commercial vehicle inspection: identification lights
(a)
Identification lights are used in groups of three in a horizontal row which
show to the front and rear of a motor vehicle, respectively, and have light
centers spaced not less than six inches nor more than 12 inches
apart.
(b) A truck or bus 80 inches
or more in width manufactured after January 1, 1965, shall be equipped with
three amber identification lights on the front of the vehicle and three red
identification lights on the rear of the vehicle. If the cab is not more than
42 inches wide at the front roof line, a single identification light at the
centerline of the cab shall be deemed to comply with the requirements for front
identification lights.
(c)
Identification lights shall be of a type approved as meeting the standards of
the United States Department of Transportation or, for motor vehicles
manufactured prior to the adoption of such standards, the standards of the
Society of Automotive Engineers. The letters "SAE" and the letters "P" or "P2,"
along with the manufacturer's name and trademark, are on the lens of such
lights in most cases.
(d) Every
identification light shall be permanently and securely mounted on a permanent
part of the vehicle as close as practical to the vertical centerline and the
top of the vehicle. No part of front identification lights or their mountings
shall extend below the top of the vehicle windshield.
