N.J. Admin. Code § 13:20-33.48 - Commercial vehicle inspection: parking brake
(a) The
parking brake shall be able to hold the motor vehicle stationary on any up or
down grade upon which it can be operated, whether the motor vehicle is empty or
loaded.
(b) The parking brake shall
be equipped with a ratchet and pawl, or other type of automatic locking device,
which will hold the brake in the applied position. On motor vehicles equipped
with an automatic transmission and an automatic parking brake release, the
locking device shall hold the parking brake in the applied position regardless
of whether the transmission gear shift lever is in the "neutral" or "park"
position.
(c) When the parking
brake is applied, there shall be a minimum of one-third of the total average
travel (as per the motor vehicle manufacturer's specifications)
remaining.
