12 Va. Admin. Code § 5-590-1002 - Chloramination
A. Chloramines
shall be acceptable for secondary disinfection. Chloramines are formed by the
reaction of ammonia and chlorine. Multiple chemical species may be created;
however, monochloramine is the desired form.
B. The process shall be controlled to
minimize formation of dichloramine and nitrogen trichloride, which can create
objectionable taste and odors. Control should be sufficient to limit free
ammonia leaving the chloramination facility to no more than 0.1 mg/L as
nitrogen.
C. pH adjustment
facilities shall be provided to maintain pH in the range of 7 to 8.
D. When use of chloramines is proposed, the
potential increase of lead leaching within the distribution system shall be
considered. Additional distribution system monitoring may be required by the
department.
E. The owner shall
inform the public before initiating any disinfection process involving
chloramines, as directed by the department.
