Structure

This set of documents provides integrated access to the several collections of historic Supreme Court Decisions prepared and mounted by the Legal Information Institute.

Prepared for WWW access at different times over the past two years, these decisions are held in three different formats.  With all three the initial link off these pages leads to a case overview document providing the user with several options in approaching the full opinion or set of opinions (majority, concurring, dissenting).

  1. A small number of decisions are held in HTML format.  The overview document in such a case is on the the Court's syllabus, which provides linked access to each of opinions.
  2. The Copyright, Trademark, Patent, and Administrative Law decisions are held on the LII's Folio Webserver.  Links to them provide an overview document that looks like this:
Selected Copyright Decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court
Sony Corp. of Am. v. Universal City Studios, Inc., 464 U.S. 417 (1984)
    Case Information
    Syllabus
    Counsel
    Opinions

Each of the case elements is link to that portion of the larger document.  In the case of the "Opinions" link the path leads to a linked listing of the several opinions that comprise the case.
  3. The most recent additions to the LII collection also reside on the Folio Webserver, but the choices on their initial case document look somewhat different, e.g.,:
    Regents of the Univ. of Cal. v. Bakke, 438 U.S. 265 (1978) (USSC+)
    1. Syllabus , 2. Full Decision , 3. Edited Decision

The syllabus link allows entry to the different parts of the decision through links to all constituent opinions and key points within them. The "Edited Decision" is the "Full Decision" trimmed of all the "case information" details.
