4 AAC 18.021 - Employment of substitute teachers
(a) A person
employed to replace a teacher who district authorities know will be absent for
more than 20 days in which the school is in session must possess a valid
teacher's certificate from this state.
(b) If district authorities know that a
teacher will be absent for more than 20 in-session days, the district must
employ a long-term substitute teacher
(1) who
holds a certificate issued under

AAC 12.305,

AAC 12.345,
4
AAC 12.355, or
4
AAC 12.360; and
(2) under the requirements imposed by this
chapter.
(c)If district
authorities know that a teacher will be absent for more than 20 in-session days
and are unable to employ a qualified applicant who holds a certificate issued
under 4 AAC 12.305,

AAC 12.345,
4
AAC 12.355, or
4
AAC 12.360, the district may employ an individual who
holds a retired teacher certificate (Type R) issued under
4
AAC 12.380 as a long-term substitute teacher for up to
120 days.
(d)If a substitute
teacher who does not possess a valid teacher's certificate from this state is
hired to fill a vacancy at the start of the school year for 20 in-session days
or less, a district must notify the department not later than August
31.
