Haw. Code R. § 6-26-2 - Effective date of retirement
The effective date of retirement shall be as follows:
(1) Service retirement: the
date specified in the written application, which date shall not be less than
thirty days nor more than one hundred fifty days subsequent to the date of
filing. Retirement shall be effective on the first day of the month, except for
the month of December when retirement on the first or last day of the month
shall be allowed.
(2) Ordinary
disability retirement: no earlier than thirty days from the date the
application was filed or the date the member terminated service, whichever is
later. A member whose application is approved by the board while the member is
still in service may terminate service and retire at any time following the
approval; provided that retirement shall become effective on the first day of
the month following the month the member terminates employment or goes off the
payroll, except for the month of December when retirement on the first or last
day of the month shall be allowed.
(3) Service-connected disability retirement:
the date the application is filed with the system, if the applicant is off the
payroll as of that date. If an applicant who files an application for
service-connected disability retirement continues to work at the applicant's
regular job, or remains on the payroll by taking paid sick or vacation leave of
absence, the effective date of retirement shall be the date the applicant
terminates employment or goes off the payroll.
