A dental program shall meet the following
requirements:
a) The curriculum must
include at least 4 academic years of instruction or its equivalent.
b) Biomedical, Behavioral, and Clinical
Science instruction must be integrated and of sufficient depth, scope,
timeliness, quality and emphasis to ensure achievement of the curriculum's
defined competencies.
c) The stated
goals of the dental education program must include the preparation of graduates
who possess the knowledge and values to begin the practice of general
dentistry.
d) A graduate shall be
competent in:
1) Providing oral health care
within the scope of general dentistry for all age groups, as well as the
medically compromised patient.
2)
Functioning in the community and practice environment.
e) The curriculum must include the following
areas of instruction:
Ethics
Critical thinking
Professional and community involvement
Patient management
History and examination
Diagnosis
Treatment planning
Emergency care
Prevention and maintenance
Oral medicine
Therapeutics/pharmacology
Periodontal therapy
Endodontic therapy
Surgical therapy
Occlusal therapy
Orthodontic therapy
Restorative/prosthodontic therapy
Office management
Personnel management
f) Graduates must be competent in providing
appropriate life support measures for medical emergencies that may be
encountered in dental practice.
g)
In determining whether a program should be approved, the Division shall take
into consideration but not be bound by accreditation by the Commission on
Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.
h) The Division, upon the recommendation of
the Board, has determined that all of the dental programs accredited by the
Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association as of
July 2006 meet the minimum curriculum criteria set forth in this Section and
are, therefore, approved.
