Kan. Admin. Regs. § 71-6-3 - Approved instruction course
(a) Each private or public educational entity seeking approval
by the board, pursuant to L. 1998 , Ch. 141 , Sec. 1, of an instruction course
shall demonstrate that the course meets the following minimum requirements:
(1) Has a student-instructor ratio consistent with the American
dental association accreditation standards for dental assisting programs;
(2) encourages enrollment by a geographically diverse
population of prospective students;
(3) includes the following course topics:
(A) Dental and gingival anatomy and morphology;
(B) periodontal disease, including recognition and treatment;
(C) dental plaque, stain, and calculus formation;
(D) sterilization and infection control;
(E) oral hygiene, with an emphasis on technique, products, and
devices;
(F) topical fluoride application;
(G) the use of instruments, including technique, position, and
sharpening;
(H) coronal scaling, including laboratory experience with
mechanical and ultrasonic devices; and
(I) coronal polishing, including laboratory experience;
(4) is a minimum of 90 hours;
(5) includes one or more outcome assessment examinations that
demonstrate that the student has obtained technical and clinical competency in
the coronal scaling of teeth; and
(6) upon successful completion of the course, issuance by the
offering educational entity of a certificate identifying the student and the
date of successful completion.
(b) Before any proposed changes are made to the required
elements of an approved instruction course, the changes shall be approved by
the board.
