Mich. Admin. Code R. 400.11213 - Exit doors and stairways
Rule 213.
(1) A
required exit door shall be a side-hinged, swing door only. In new
construction, additions and conversions, an exit door shall not be less than 36
inches wide. A door forming part of a means of egress where door hardware is
used shall be of a type that is nonlocking-against-egress and operable with a
single motion. The use of hooks and eyes, bolts, bars, and similar devices is
prohibited.
(2) A door that forms a
part of a means of egress shall swing in the direction of egress for
occupancies of 13 or more.
(3) In
new construction, additions, conversions, renovations, and remodeling, an exit
door that is required to swing out shall swing directly onto a floor-level
landing that is at least as deep as the swing of the door before the start of
any steps or ramps to grade.
(4) An
exterior wall of a building which has an outside stairway that is used as a
required means of egress shall not have windows, vents, or other openings
within an area of 6 feet from the stairway, except for either of the following:
(a) Windows that are constructed of wired
glass and are not openable.
(b)
Doorways that are used for egress only and are smoke tight.
(5) Interior convenience stairways
shall be provided with a minimum 1 3/4-inch solid wood core door equipped with
positive self-latching hardware and a self-closing device. All vertical
openings, such as stairways, transfer grills, pipes, ducts, and conduit, shall
be sealed with material that is equal to standard partition
construction.
(6) In new and
existing buildings, only ambulatory campers shall be permitted above or below
the first or ground floor, except where the floor above or below the first
floor provides all required exiting at grade without using stairways.
(7) In new construction, additions,
conversions, or remodeling, where stairs or steps are used in any part of the
required means of egress for camper-occupied areas, they shall have maximum
risers of 7 inches and minimum treads of 11 inches. Sturdy and securely
fastened guardrails and handrails that are located between 30 and 34 inches,
measured vertically, above the nose of the treads shall be provided wherever
more than 3 steps are used.
