Mich. Admin. Code R. 408.16351 - Acid rooms, acid towers, and acid tanks
Rule 6351.
(1)
An employer shall ensure that the employee is provided with eye protection, a
supplied air respirator, and a personal fall protection system that meets the
requirements of General Industry Safety and Health Standard Part 33 "Personal
Protective Equipment," as referenced in
R
408.16302, during inspection, repairs or maintenance
of acid towers. The line shall be extended to an attendant stationed outside
the tower opening.
(2) Walkways,
stairs, and other equipment in acid rooms, acid towers, and acid tanks shall be
inspected monthly for corrosion and replaced or repaired where any part shows a
defect affecting employee safety.
(3) Where hoops are used on acid tanks, the
hoops must be made of rods rather than flat strip stock and be inspected and
maintained as prescribed in subrule (2) of this rule.
(4) Pressure tanks-accumulators shall be
inspected semiannually as prescribed in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Code, Section VIII, "Unfired Pressure Vessels," 1989 with addenda, as adopted
in
R
408.16302.
(5) An employer shall ensure that when lead
burning is performed within tanks, fresh air is forced into the tanks so that
fresh air will reach the face of the employee first and the direction of the
current will never be from the source of the fumes toward the face of the
employees. Supplied air respirators, such as constant-flow type, shall be
provided as required in Occupational Health Standard Part 451 "Respiratory
Protection," as referenced in
R
408.16302.
