Minn. R. agency 158, ch. 6130, TACONITE AND IRON ORE RECLAMATION STANDARDS, pt. 6130.3000 - DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND OPERATION OF TAILINGS BASINS
Tailings basins shall be designed, constructed, and operated according to the following:
A. The
storage of tailings within an approved site shall be maximized while meeting
part 6130.2000.
B. A means of
draining the pond area and managing runoff shall be provided consistent with
part 6130.2200.
C. During the
mining operation dust generation shall be minimized by maximizing the area of
permanently reclaimed tailings. The remaining active tailings areas shall be
covered with water to the maximum extent possible and beach areas shall be
temporarily stabilized consistent with part 6130.3700.
D. Tailings basins shall be designed, by
registered professional engineers proficient in geotechnical and other aspects
of design, construction, operation, and maintenance of tailings basins. The
construction, operation, and maintenance of basins shall be periodically
reviewed by such engineers to ensure compliance with the design.
