Ohio Admin. Code 4123:1-17-06 - Safety belts, safety harnesses, lifelines, and lanyards

(A) When required, lifelines Lifelines shall be securely fastened to the structure. Lifelines, safety belts, safety harnesses, and lanyards shall be used only for employee safeguarding and shall be able to sustain a static load of no less than five thousand pounds (two thousand two hundred sixty-eight kilograms). Any lifeline, safety belt, safety harness, or lanyard actually subjected to in-service loading, as distinguished from static load testing, shall be removed from service and shall not be never used again for employee safeguarding.

(B) Where the lifeline may be subjected to cutting or abrasion, a minimum seven-eighths- inch (twenty-two millimeters) wire core manilla rope, or equivalent, shall be provided. For all other lifeline applications, a minimum of three-fourths- inch (nineteen millimeters) manilla rope, or equivalent, shall be provided.

(C) Safety belt lanyards or safety harness lanyards shall be a minimum of one-half- inch (thirteen millimeters) nylon, or equivalent, with a maximum length to provide for a fall of no more than six feet (1.8 meters).

(D) All safety belt, or safety harness, and lanyard hardware shall be cadmium plated and made of either drop forged or pressed steel, cadmium plated. Surfaces shall be smooth and free from sharp edges.

(E) All safety belt, or safety harness, and lanyard hardware shall be capable of withstanding a tensile loading of four thousand pounds (one thousand eight hundred fifteen kilograms) without cracking, breaking, or becoming permanently deformed.
