Standards for Approval

In order to meet the approval of the Vermont Department of Education and the Department of Motor Vehicles, a driving range shall include areas for:

1. a straight section for stopping, starting and backing
2. right and left hand turns
3. legal turn around maneuver
4. angle parking
5. parallel parking
6. lane changing
7. passing
8. stop signs and other traffic control signs
9. intersections
10. curves.

The area must be closed to all other vehicular traffic to comply with the law. A method of radio communication must exist between the instructor and students.

A ratio of 2:1 should be used when substituting range time for the six hours behind-the-wheel instruction (i.e., 2 hours on range - 1 hour on road). Also, at least 4 of the 6 hours driving must be done on the public highway under normal traffic conditions.
