forthwith

Forthwith is a legal term meaning immediately or without delay. In legal documents and court orders, it generally requires that an action be taken as soon as reasonably possible under the circumstances. The exact timing may depend on the context of the order. While the term implies prompt action, courts may interpret it to allow the time reasonably necessary to carry out the required act.

For example, a court may order that a defendant be released from custody forthwith after charges are dismissed, meaning the authorities must release the defendant immediately once the order is received.
