The term used to describe a legal practitioner in admiralty law. According to 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica, the term was used in Medieval England in a number of other legal contexts as well: legal practitioners in ecclesiastic courts (i.e. a court system administered by the clergy); and the kings proctor represented the Crown in probate and divorce court.
