res nova

Res nova refers to a novel case or legal issue that has not previously been decided by a court. 

Etymology:

  • Res nova is a Latin term meaning “a new thing”. 
    • Res means “thing” or “matter”.
    • Nova means “new”.
      • An example is de novo, or “anew”.
