self-repealing clause

A self-repealing clause is a stipulation found in a written document, or a specific part of a document, indicating that it is set to automatically expire at a preset date, or after a certain event occurs. Self-repealing clauses, also called sunset clauses, are used in statutes to automatically repeal regulations. This can be helpful by eliminating legislation once its purpose has been achieved or by forcing attention to and discussion of the law. These clauses are also utilized in contracts by requiring an action to be taken. For example, an employment offer letter that expires after one week of a verbal offer is a contract with a self-repealing clause.
