subject to a condition subsequent
Subject to a condition subsequent means that a contract or agreement can or will be void and will end if/when a particular event or action occurs. For example, under a will that is subject to a condition subsequent, the distribution of assets to beneficiaries will be revoked if a condition occurs that the testator specified against.
For example, if a parent leaves property to their adult child in their will, but specifies the property cannot be used for business purposes. Upon receiving the title of the property, the child opens a business which is in violation of the will, then the child can lose the right to the property.
For further explanation, please see: Condition subsequent.
