transinstitutionalization

Transinstitutionalization is the process of moving a person from one type of institutional facility, such as a psychiatric facility or developmental center, to another facility/institution that is not their home, such as prison . Other examples of the places such individuals are moved to include hospitals, shelters, nursing homes, adult care facilities, or jails. Transinstitutionalism is based on a hypothesis by English Scientist Lionel Penrose that the populations of psychiatric institutions and prisons are inversely correlated. The relationship suggests that as the number of patients in psychiatric facilities or developmental centers decrease due to deinstitutionalization , the number of individuals in other institutional settings (such as prison) increase; however, this hypothesis has neither been proven nor disproven .
