Treatment over objection refers to the administration of medical treatment to a patient without their consent. This usually occurs when the patient is incapable of making informed decisions due to serious mental illness or other conditions that impair their decision-making abilities. In such cases, a licensed mental health hospital may request permission to administer psychiatric medication or some other type of treatment over the patient’s objection. In some states, the patient must pose a danger to themselves or others to justify treatment over objection.
