impanel

To impanel is to select and assign a jury for the purpose of deciding a case , also known as empanel. The usual steps of impaneling may include:

  1. collecting the names of potential jurors in a random manner;
  2. selecting the individuals who will serve on the jury;
  3. giving potential jurors an opportunity to state the reasons why they should not serve on the jury;
  4. allowing the defense and prosecution to use their challenges to dismiss potential jurors;
  5. having jurors and alternate jurors sworn in.
