A sponsor is a person or entity that takes responsibility for supporting another person, proposal, or venture.
In legislation, a sponsor introduces or supports a bill. In immigration, a sponsor is a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or employer who is a petitioner and agrees to support an immigrant. See: USCIS, Affidavit of Support and Form I-864, Affidavit of Support under Section 213A of the INA. In business, a sponsor promotes or backs a project, investment, or partnership.
