Welcome to the LII

Thank you for wanting to learn more about the Legal Information Institute. The LII is an independently-funded project of the Cornell Law School.

We are a small team of technologists who believe that everyone should be able to read and understand the laws that govern them. 

We employ technology to gather, process, and publish public legal information that is accurate and objective.  Learn more about our operation here.

The LII Crawler gathers links to guidance for industry published by federal agencies.

End-of-life announcement

As of today (March 1, 2013), the LII is discontinuing its search engine for the United States Courts of Appeal.  It has proven too difficult for us to maintain given our small staff and the absence of standard approaches across the 13 Circuit Courts of Appeal.  We simply can't offer the service at the level of quality that our audience deserves, and are therefore discontinuing it rather than offer subpar results.

We are sorry  for any disappointment or inconvenience this may cause.

The Wex Definitions Team is a group of Cornell Law Students organized and supervised by LII Original Content Collections Manager Nichole McCarthy to provide enhanced definitions of important legal terms and concepts to aid the general public in understanding them.  In other words, the goal of the Wex project is to use law students to demystify legal language to the best of our collective ability.  Nothing in Wex should be construed as legal advice, nor should it be considered to be the position or

Most of our publishing efforts go into producing and maintaining the extensive legal collections on this web site.  Each year, they are used by over 32 million people from more than 240 countries and territories.  As the first law site on the internet, we are proud to lend our expertise to new LIIs that develop in all parts of the world.
