probationary period
A probationary period is a defined period of employment during which an employee’s performance and conduct are assessed before acquiring full employment rights or protections. Probationary periods are often used in public-sector and unionized positions, where successful completion of the probationary period is required for permanent status or eligibility for benefits and grievance procedures. During this period, the employer may generally terminate the employee with fewer procedural safeguards than would apply after permanent status is achieved. The length and terms of a probationary period are usually governed by employer policies, collective bargaining agreements, or applicable labor laws.
